MTS 318.25 machine for material testing

Versatile, multi-purpose servohydraulic test system for static and dynamic tests.

MTS 318.25 test system is a completely integrated testing package to let you easily obtain information about the mechanical properties of your materials and parts. A peculiarity of TestStar IIs controller is an intuitive, graphical interface that makes it easy to set and run tests without learning mysterious codes or memorizing functions of dozens of knobs and buttons on a control panel. As a result you spend less time setting up and more time running tests. Besides, since the controller is completely controlled by a software, new capabilities can be easily added through a simple upgrade of the software (package Multi-Purpose TestWare , package for static tests TestWorks 4 and multitude of application program modules allowing easily carry out your tests). These closely integrated packages provide excellent reproducibility of tests and accurate results.

Advantages of 318.25

Flexibility

Should you investigate characteristics of fracture mechanics of recent materials, properties of composites during compression or carry out testing of other more traditional materials, MTS 138.25 system for material testing can be configured for performance of these requirements.

Accuracy

Superior axial and lateral stiffness were achieved due to integral structure of load cylinder, stiff, but lightweight crosshead and specially designed force sensors. Accuracy load frame alignment is achieved due to precision machining of columns, factory assembly and laser centering. Cylinder rod has accurate mechanical treatment and cylinder is fixed in such a way as to provide centering.

Test systems oriented on your tasks

1

MTS 318.25 systems are highly integrated test systems which can be configured exactly in accordance with your requirements. Each of them includes a load frame of 318 model with mounted in it load cylinder and servovalve, hydraulic pump station and MTS TestStar IIs control system as shown below. TestStar IIs control system has three main parts: PC operated TestStar system software, digital controller and (additionally) remote control panel. Together they provide you with completely automated control of tests. Additional modules of application software provide you with more accurate system adjustment in order to automate most of the standard and special testing methods. Characteristics of the system can be adjusted in accordance to your requirements through the selection of load frame for necessary forces, servovalve with required oil flow and corresponding pump. You can select from a number MTS testing facilities, including grips, installation kits, extensometers, temperature furnaces and force sensors, ones that will make your system appropriate for your test requirements.

Flexibility in carrying out most of material and part testing
Fatigue strength tests

MTS 318.25 systems were used during fatigue strength tests of almost each type of material – from titanium to recent ceramics and plastics. Very rigid structure of the load frame, imbedded load cylinder and precision laser centering minimize the errors from bending deformations while TestStar algorithms of digital control and patented MTS grips provide accurate loading and reproducibility of results. If you are going to carry out standard tests on high-cycle (HCF) or low-cycle fatigue (LCF), our program package for cyclic fatigue tests can save the time and increase test efficiency. It includes samples for fast and accurate performance of tests in accordance with standards ASTM E606 (LCF tests at fixed temperature) and E466 (HCF tests). Besides, Advanced LCF test sample supports a transfer from LCF to HCF tests with force value control, so you can obtain LCF critical data and then quickly carry out fracture tests. Our program package MultiPurpose TestWare provides high capacities for creation of your own test procedures in case of non-standard tests.

Investigations of crack propagation and fracture mechanics

318.25 system is ideal for the investigation of crack propagation and fracture mechanics. A big workspace allows setting of many test samples. An accurate test control and data accumulation are provided by the whole range of MTS grips, devices for bend tests, COD sensors of crack growth and extensometers.
4
Tensile, compression and bend testing

MTS 318.25 system can carry out tensile, compression and bend testing at monotonic loading as well as creep testing. Control of load and deformation (using extensometer as a control device) as well as travel control can be done in all these tests. Involving a small force sensor, the system can carry out accurate investigations of the properties of soft biomaterials. And at last, high speed of cylinder, which can be achieved by servohydraulics, provides 318.25 systems with the possibility to carry out tests in a wide range of deformation rates. MTS TestWorks package has a wide range of possibilities for carrying out monotonic tests. Define (Task) Division allows you easily changing test procedures to develop new. Build-in library of calculations comprises formulae, applicable for the most ASTM, ISO and DIN standards, or you can develop your own. Build-in package of diagrams allows you deciding a type of data representation and entering own rules for calculation of properties, such as modulus of elasticity, yield strength etc.
5
Testing of parts

318.25 system can be used for investigation of fatigue strength of wide range of parts, including switchers, connectors, biomedical implants, auto parts, grips, springs, tools, sport equipment and many others. Using MTS servohydraulic technology for these tests, you obtain better control and reproducibility at high frequencies than it can be provided by mechanical or pneumatic equipment. 318.25 system is capable to apply static as well as cyclic loads with amplitude control. If there is a necessity in more complex loading, the advantages of our additional package MultiPurpose TestWare can be used in order to create unique solution for your specific tasks. An example is a block loading, spectrum load or combination of monotonic and cyclic loads. MultiPurpose TestWare has high flexibility allowing you quickly create own tests with any chain of commands and data accumulation. New test requirements can be performed in the course of several minutes through development of new test procedure and saving it for future use.

TestStar IIs control system

TestStar IIs control system is easy in application, reasonable in price solution for one-channel tests. Developed for users of all levels it is ideal for control of wide range of tests for many types of materials and parts. You will be able to set and carry out tests of materials and parts with the help of TestStar IIs, using PC operated graphic mouse controlled software. System works in Windows NT operating system. TestStar Iis includes three main components:

  • TestStar IIs system software
  • TestStar IIs remote control panel (option*)
  • TestStar IIs digital controller

Program software is a heart of TestStar IIs system. The main TestStar IIs window with the help of series of menu provides fast access to all commands necessary for tests setting. These commands include the windows for sensors assignment, setting of limits, automatic zero adjustment of sensors, and, where necessary, specifying of the parameters such as limits of errors and settings. Different windows are easily activated, but usually, if there is no need in them, they are hidden.
2
Accurate control of tests

TestStar IIs system accurately controls the tests, combining a choice of  different adaptive compensation techniques with state system tuning. This means that tests will reach its programmed end levels even while specimen characteristics change. MTS provides a range of adaptive compensation techniques, each optimized to meet specific application requirements. You can choose among the following control techniques: peak/valley, amplitude/mean value, amplitude and phase, adaptive inverse control etc.

  • Peak/valley control adapts as specimen compliance changes to ensure peaks and valleys are maintained for any constant amplitude periodic waveform.
  • Amplitude and phase control adapts for phase change as well as amplitudes of sinusoidal waveforms.
  • Null pacing will pace the test program to allow the system reach programmed end levels without overprogramming.
  • Adaptive inverse control adapts for applications of linear systems, typically in conjunction random loading or time-history files.

Additional application software

There are a number of additional program modules for TestStar IIs control system, including:

  • MultiPurpose TestWare
  • High-cycle, low-cycle and extended low-cycle fatigue
  • Growth of fatigue crack
  • Fracture mechanics
  • TestWorks 4 (monotonic tests)
  • Programming library (Visual Basic ®, C ++, LabVIEW ®)

These tightly integrated modules allow easy carrying out standard tests and obtaining accurate, reproducible results.
